Magnetic Fields

Though Jean-Michel Jarre’s first album of the ’80s is composed of a single electronic suite, it’s both more urgent and features greater rhythmic momentum than any of the epic synthesiser journeys he’d taken before. Seemingly informed by the early ’80s synth-pop explosion—for which Jarre’s earlier albums helped lay the groundwork—Les Chants Magnétiques is the sound of a concept coming full circle. Upbeat, percolating rhythms and perky snatches of melody tickle the ear along the way, as the extended piece evolves.
